Hotzy: The Startup That Chose to Stay and Build in Sri Lanka

In 2022, when many were leaving Sri Lanka chasing dreams abroad, Amali and Chamath stayed. With just a small poly tunnel, a big heart, and a love for spice, they decided to turn their passion into something extraordinary — Hotzy, a hot sauce brand that celebrates bold Sri Lankan flavors.

Born in Difficult Times

The couple started their business during the country’s economic crisis, at a moment when most people were looking outward rather than inward. The polytunnel that supplied their first ingredients was designed and developed by Chamath himself, allowing them to build a value-added product from what they grew on their own land.

Their initial goal was simple yet ambitious: to create hot sauces that balanced heat with unforgettable flavor, using natural ingredients and no artificial flavors or colors.

The journey wasn’t always easy. From setting up the first polytunnel to perfecting recipes, every recipe was tested and every bottle crafted with care.

The Hotzy Promise

The founders believe food is more than fuel — it is a celebration of culture, creativity, and community. That belief shaped their commitment to using only the best ingredients, maintaining the highest quality standards, and crafting products that are both flavorful and healthy.

Their mission is to bring the taste of Sri Lanka to global tables while keeping the products true to their values.

Milestones So Far

For a young startup, Hotzy’s progress has been remarkable. In under a year, the team established a state-of-the-art production facility, introduced two hot sauce varieties, and expanded to customers across the country.

The brand took part in the International Industry Expo 2024, connecting with industry experts and showcasing its flavors. It also won the Bronze Enterprise Award for the Productive Sector in the small category, organised by the National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA) together with the North Central Province Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.

Hotzy is also certified with ISO 22000:2018 for its food safety practices.

What Comes Next

The road ahead includes new condiments, flavors, and innovations aimed at the global market. The founders are equally committed to sustainability, empowering local farmers, and creating a positive impact in their community.

For the startup Sri Lanka community, Hotzy is a reminder that even in tough times, something amazing can grow right at home.

Sri Lanka has launched this year’s petroleum exploration licensing round for the Mannar Basin, with the official launch taking place on August 25 at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation headquarters. Organised by the Petroleum Development Authority of Sri Lanka, the event was held under the patronage of Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka and Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha. Under the latest licensing round, four exploration blocks covering approximately 34,000 square kilometres in the Mannar Basin will be offered to international energy companies for further exploration. The Ministry said previous exploration activities in the basin had confirmed the presence of petroleum and natural gas, including discoveries of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. Petroleum Development Authority Director General Neil de Silva said the basin’s largely unexplored areas present significant opportunities for international investors to undertake further exploration using modern geological surveying methods and advanced technologies. He added that prospective companies would also have access to geological information on the Mannar Basin held by the Authority. According to de Silva, existing geological data suggests that the Mannar Basin could hold around 2 billion barrels of petroleum and 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with the potential for these resources to be commercially recovered through drilling.
