Marawa Ceylon Cinnamon: A Century-Old Legacy Reimagined for Today
Hidden in the lush green hills of Kekanadura, Matara, lies the soul of Marawa Ceylon Cinnamon — a story built on heritage, authenticity, and purpose.
A Story That Began Over a Century Ago
It all began more than a hundred years ago, when the Dominican family, early settlers of Dutch descent, discovered the rare magic of the southern soil and found it perfect for cultivating cinnamon.
Within the fertile Marawa Mount Range, blessed by tropical rains and sea-kissed winds, the world’s most treasured spice found its home.
After years of quiet dormancy, this legacy was lovingly revived in 1919 by Nagal Mullage Babun Appu Hami, a visionary farmer whose deep respect for the land restored cinnamon to its true glory. His family carried the tradition forward through generations, each one preserving the values of purity, craftsmanship, and respect for nature.
Old Methods, New Products
At Marawa, the time-honored methods of hand-harvesting True Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) remain unchanged. What has changed is what the spice becomes.
Innovation has given new life to this ancient art. Today, Marawa transforms cinnamon into Cinnamon Coffees, Cinnamon Teas, and Cinnamon Body Care and Wellness Products — bringing the tropical warmth of Sri Lanka to the world in refined, modern forms.
This kind of thinking will feel familiar to anyone in the startup Sri Lanka space: taking a raw local product and building higher-value goods from it, rather than exporting it unchanged.
Built on Care
Marawa’s journey is rooted in care — for people, for the planet, and for the generations to come.
From natural farming and replanting to zero-waste production and eco-friendly packaging, every step reflects a promise to sustain what nature gives.
Each cinnamon quill is mountain-grown, sun-nurtured, and handcrafted to perfection, capturing the essence of the tropics in its golden curls. It is not just spice; it is a living heritage.
From Mountain Soil to Your Cup
From colonial roots to village hands, from mountain soil to the cup, Marawa carries forward the story of the Dominican family and the Sri Lankan spirit, blending history, nature, and craftsmanship into every product.
