Startup Sri Lanka Spotlight: Mild Earth and the Quiet Launch of Wild Mist Water

A new name has entered the startup Sri Lanka conversation: Mild Earth, founded by young marketing professional Sohan Jayasena. Its debut product, Wild Mist Water, has already drawn distribution interest from more than eight countries — an unusually early signal of international demand for a brand that launched with almost no noise at all.

A quiet reveal in Colombo 7

Wild Mist Water was introduced at a low-key unveiling in Colombo 7, a deliberate contrast to the spectacle that usually accompanies a consumer launch. Jayasena describes the product as “a luxury wellness experience inspired by Sri Lanka’s botanical heritage.” The ambition behind that phrasing is not modest: he wants to build an export brand that eventually stands alongside Ceylon tea in the global imagination.

What goes into the blend

The beverage arrives in four variants, packaged in canisters and brewed much the way tea is. Each blend is built from spices long familiar in Sri Lankan kitchens and traditional wellness practice — coriander seeds, nigella, cloves, cinnamon, rosemary and lemongrass.

The result is intentionally restrained. Rather than a bold flavour hit, Wild Mist Water is designed for a calming aroma, a smooth mouthfeel and a slow finish that unfolds across the cup. In a crowded functional-drinks market, its pitch is something increasingly scarce: a deliberate pause in the day.

Why international distributors are paying attention

Interest from eight markets before a full commercial rollout says less about marketing spend than about positioning. Global demand for premium botanical and functional beverages continues to grow, and buyers in that category place a premium on a credible origin story. Sri Lanka’s spice trade is one of the few origin stories in the world that needs no explanation — which gives Sri Lankan startups working in this space a head start that is difficult to manufacture elsewhere.

Heritage without the nostalgia

At the centre of the brand is Jayasena’s conviction that Sri Lanka’s wellness heritage requires no exaggeration or nostalgia to be relevant in modern life — only thoughtful reinterpretation.

That instinct, more than the product itself, is what makes Mild Earth worth watching. The island’s startup ecosystem has no shortage of heritage to draw on. What it needs is founders willing to reinterpret it for a global shelf.
