The government has approved the payment of more than Rs. 4.5 billion in outstanding statutory dues to over 10,000 current and retired employees of three state owned plantation institutions.
The payments, which have been pending for more than 20 years, will be made to employees and former employees of the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation, Janatha Estate Development Board and Elkaduwa Plantations Company, which operate under the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure.

Cabinet approval was granted following a proposal submitted on the initiative of Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Vidyaratne, in recognition of the economic and health challenges faced by plantation workers, particularly after retirement and during old age.Under the approved payments, more than Rs. 1.961 billion will be allocated to around 3,000 employees of the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation.

A further Rs. 2.024 billion will be provided to 6,123 employees of the Janatha Estate Development Board, while more than Rs. 503 million will be allocated to around 1,000 employees of Elkaduwa Plantations Company.
Accordingly, the total allocation is expected to exceed Rs. 4.5 billion.

The government said the decision is in line with its policy commitments to protect the rights of plantation communities, particularly the Malaiyaha Tamil community, while strengthening their economic security.
The initial payment of the outstanding gratuity benefits is scheduled to commence on September 10 at the Kandy District Secretariat.

Global Demand For Sri Lankan Agri Products On The Rise

Sri Lanka has launched this year’s petroleum exploration licensing round for the Mannar Basin, with the official launch taking place on August 25 at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation headquarters. Organised by the Petroleum Development Authority of Sri Lanka, the event was held under the patronage of Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka and Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha. Under the latest licensing round, four exploration blocks covering approximately 34,000 square kilometres in the Mannar Basin will be offered to international energy companies for further exploration. The Ministry said previous exploration activities in the basin had confirmed the presence of petroleum and natural gas, including discoveries of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. Petroleum Development Authority Director General Neil de Silva said the basin’s largely unexplored areas present significant opportunities for international investors to undertake further exploration using modern geological surveying methods and advanced technologies. He added that prospective companies would also have access to geological information on the Mannar Basin held by the Authority. According to de Silva, existing geological data suggests that the Mannar Basin could hold around 2 billion barrels of petroleum and 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with the potential for these resources to be commercially recovered through drilling.
