From a Harvard Lab to a Fashion Label: The Founder Behind Amelia & Lane

Not every startup Sri Lanka success story begins in a tech park. Dr. Dushani Ranasinghe built hers between a biochemistry laboratory in Boston and a family legacy in the island’s apparel industry — and the result is Amelia & Lane, a fashion brand offering timeless design and considered craftsmanship to women across Sri Lanka.

A scientist first

Ranasinghe’s route to entrepreneurship runs through some of the most demanding institutions in her field. A graduate of the University of Colombo, she completed her PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame before joining Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School as a Research Fellow, where her work focuses on vascular biology and aging.

That career continues alongside the business. What carries across, she suggests, is method: the same precision and discipline that structure a research programme now shape how a collection is developed, tested and released.

Turning a family legacy into a modern brand

Sri Lanka’s apparel sector is one of its most established industries, and Ranasinghe grew up close to it. Amelia & Lane is her reinterpretation of that inheritance rather than a continuation of it — a brand built for a customer who wants fewer, better pieces.

The label’s philosophy is compressed into three words: Subtle. Strong. Her. In practice that means a deliberate rejection of fast fashion in favour of timeless silhouettes, natural fabrics and mindful production. The intent is not seasonal turnover but longevity — garments that stay in a wardrobe rather than cycling out of it.

Digital-first, islandwide

Amelia & Lane operates on a digital-first model with free islandwide delivery, which quietly solves a persistent problem in the local premium market: access. Considered fashion in Sri Lanka has tended to concentrate in a handful of Colombo boutiques. Removing the storefront removes the geography, putting the same collections in front of a customer in Jaffna or Matara on equal terms.

Global expertise, local heritage

The appeal of Ranasinghe’s story is not simply that a scientist started a fashion brand. It is what the combination makes possible — an international research career and a deep-rooted local industry brought into the same venture, each informing the other.

For a generation of Sri Lankan founders building between two countries, it is a useful model: the expertise travels, and so does the commitment to home.

  • Sri Lanka has launched this year’s petroleum exploration licensing round for the Mannar Basin, with the official launch taking place on August 25 at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation headquarters. Organised by the Petroleum Development Authority of Sri Lanka, the event was held under the patronage of Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka and Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha. Under the latest licensing round, four exploration blocks covering approximately 34,000 square kilometres in the Mannar Basin will be offered to international energy companies for further exploration. The Ministry said previous exploration activities in the basin had confirmed the presence of petroleum and natural gas, including discoveries of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. Petroleum Development Authority Director General Neil de Silva said the basin’s largely unexplored areas present significant opportunities for international investors to undertake further exploration using modern geological surveying methods and advanced technologies. He added that prospective companies would also have access to geological information on the Mannar Basin held by the Authority. According to de Silva, existing geological data suggests that the Mannar Basin could hold around 2 billion barrels of petroleum and 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with the potential for these resources to be commercially recovered through drilling.
