Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath stated that a proposal has been submitted to the Chinese government to set up electric vehicle charging stations throughout Sri Lanka.
In a social media post, Minister Herath said the proposal was made during a meeting held today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong.
The Foreign Minister said the Chinese Ambassador noted that, following the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, the Chinese government plans to assess the situation and discuss the assistance it can offer in all relevant sectors.
Minister Herath also said it was emphasized that the Sri Lankan government is seeking urgent assistance from China to repair railway lines and bridges damaged by flooding, and the Ambassador agreed to immediately bring this matter to the attention of the Chinese government.
“Furthermore, as Sri Lanka is increasingly importing electric vehicles from China and other global markets, I proposed giving priority to establishing charging stations across the country. I also stressed that this would be a significant step in view of the government’s plans to import more electric buses in the future,” he said.
Minister Herath added that the Chinese Ambassador responded positively to the proposal and agreed to convey it to the Chinese government.
