Farah Rumy, a 34-year-old politician of Sri Lankan origin, has made history as the first person with Sri Lankan roots to be elected to the Swiss Federal Parliament. Born in Colombo, she relocated to Switzerland during her childhood and later established a notable career as a nurse, healthcare expert, educator, and community leader.

Rumy’s path to national politics started with her role in the Cantonal Council of Solothurn, where she concentrated on health policy, social matters, and equal opportunity initiatives. Her strong commitment to public service and her background in healthcare paved the way for her nomination and election to the National Council, the lower house of Switzerland’s federal legislature, representing the Social Democratic Party.

In Parliament, Rumy promotes wide-ranging healthcare reforms, enhanced social protection systems, and an inclusive approach to foreign policy. She is also actively involved in labour rights and migrant advocacy, while consistently supporting diversity and equal representation within Swiss politics.

Her election represents a major milestone in Swiss political history, highlighting the country’s increasingly diverse political environment and the rising impact of leaders from migrant backgrounds.
